This paper deals with melancholy from the three classical points of view: Melancholy as a humour (theory of the four humours), Melancholy as a mental illness (deep depression and anxiety attacks), and Melancholy as a temporary nostalgic mood (the mood in which most poets write their works). Poetic melancholy had its breeding ground in literature after the works by Robert Burton (Anatomy of Melancholy), the famous 17th century physician Thomas Sydenham and Nicholas Robinson (A New System of the Spleen, Vapours and Hypochondriack Melancholy, 1729).
